Almost Varsity Sports Hot Soup Picks: Week 12

AVS is back, baybeeeeee. It’s never a bad weekend when you hit the plays you’re the most confident in. A profitable week once again, and we’re back on the path to being rich AF. If you follow us on twitter, you’re already 1-0 with our first victory of the week for two units.

Memphis (-7) @ Cincinnati

Memphis was the easy winner as our Twitter/newsletter subscribers were given a gift. Memphis ran away with this one. Cincy is in shambles and their head coach, Tommy Tubberville, told a Bearcats fan to “get a job” last week. This Bearcats finish could get VERY ugly.

The pick: Memphis (-7) (2 units)

Ole Miss (-10) @ Vanderbilt

Chad Kelly is done for the year. This game is a game of two teams viewing their season very differently. Ole Miss started the season with a chance to make the CFP. After a few, big, early losses, the team was still holding out hope. Three straight SEC losses ruined the season. The team squeaked out a 10 point win vs Georgia Southern ( 😉 we called that, too) in which they lost their starting QB for the entire year. Barely beating an A&M team that is falling apart a week later impresses no one. Ole Miss has packed it in and Vanderbilt is playing their hearts out to make a bowl game. This will be tight throughout. The bad Ole Miss rushing defense will allow Vanderbilt to control this game. Don’t be surprised to see an outright win for the home underdog.

The pick: Vanderbilt (+10) (2 units)

1H UTSA @ Texas A&M (-17.5)
The Aggies are currently free falling after getting ranked number 4 in the first college football playoff rankings. Back to back losses at Mississippi State and Ole Miss (without their starting QB) are AWFUL. Aggieland is calling for Kevin Sumlin’s head. I can’t even imagine how hard it will be for local Aggie fans to get going for this 11am local time kickoff. The stadium will be nowhere near where it should be in terms of noise. The roadrunners have played surprisingly well as an underdog. As 22 point dogs against Arizona State early in the year they almost pulled the outright upset. I can see UTSA getting a few scores right out of the gate against a dejected Aggies team. This should be a very easy cover and I could even see these teams heading into the locker room staring at a UTSA lead. Newsletter readers were able to grab a KEY .5 as this is now at 17 in the market.

The pick: UTSA (+17.5) (3 units)

UCONN @ Boston College (Total: 38)

Another instance that shows how important it is to SUBSCRIBE to the newsletter. We took this number at 38 at the time the newsletter was sent. We are now down to 36 in the market. I’m still taking the under here. Both teams stink and their offenses are atrocious. I just can’t see points scored here. Take the under.

The pick: Under 38 (1.5 Units)

Kansas State (pick em) @ Baylor

Bill Snyder is one of my favorite NCAA coaches. He is 8-0 ATS with a full two weeks to prepare. Baylor is starting a true freshman after Seth Russell’s career ended with an injury. I love Kansas State to come out swinging here as they fight to make a bowl game. Snyder will have his team ready to go.

The pick: Kansas State (pick em) (2 Units)

The leans:
Duke (+7) / ML (+250) – Cutcliffe is one of the best underdog coaches in the NCAA. Take the Dukies because Pitt won’t be able to come back to earth after the Clemson upset
UTSA (+28) – The Road Runners will keep this game close. LOVE THIS GAME TODAY
West Virginia (+3) / ML – Public money is pouring in on the Oklahoma Sooners. WVU has a very good defense that should be able to bottle up Baker Mayfield. That WVU crowd will be rowdy as usual as they pray for the longshot playoff berth. Points and a money line bet here
SD State (1H -6.5) / SD State (-10) – against the Mountain West, these guys cover. Plain and simple
Michigan State (+21.5) – Mark Dantonio is a great underdog coach. His team will be ready to go at home. Bad weather in East Lansing will be huge for a three touchdown cushion
Washington State (+6) / ML – Washington State is playing some of the best football in college football right now. They shouldn’t be looking forward to the apple cup against Washington next week. They too have a very longshot at a playoff berth.
OK State (ML) – TCU has been disappointing this year and Kenny Trill has been a bit of a disappointment. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the upset here as the OK State offense can play with anyone in the conference.
East Carolina (+9) / ML – just say i have a very, very strange feeling the Pirates pull the upset against Navy here.

Southern Miss (+3) – This is completely contingent on Nick Mullens playing. Absolutely no one knows anything about his status. If you can find out he’s in, take the Golden Eagles
Houston (-25) – Greg Ward has been battling injuries all year to his shoulder. He had a week off and this Houston team is looking to show they aren’t the aberration people think they are. Tulane stinks too.
Minnesota (ML) – I have a strange feeling Minnesota is going to go into Nebraska and win this outright. Believe it or not, they still control their own destiny in the Big 10
San Diego State (-13 1H) – love Donnell Pumphrey He’ll run all over a bad Nevada team.
